Join us for a brief history of telegraphy and its local relevance. By the late nineteenth century, the telegraph was essential to communication and commerce, similar to the internet today. Ambitious people created the opportunity for the telegraph to arrive here in the PNW in 1866, in time to serve the needs of the American and British forces jointly occupying the San Juans.
A licensed ham radio operator, Doug is interested in Morse code and telegraphy and worked as a Ranger with the National Park Service from 1998-2020. Doug served at San Juan as a historical interpretation ranger and historic weapons safety officer.
