The Trump Administration is paving the way to increase logging and road construction in national forests, including two million acres of land in Washington alone, in a move that would strip away a 25-year-old rule aimed at keeping those forests pristine.
Tom Uniack, executive director of nonprofit Washington Wild, said the USDA’s logic isn’t sound. Uniack notes that scientific studies and wildland firefighters have reported the vast majority of wildfires have happened within 50 meters of roads.
“So if you were to add roads to these areas that don’t have them,” said Uniack, “you’re going to get more fires, not less.”
