On Monday October 16, 2017, Washington Department of Ecology (DOE) announced official approval for San Juan County’s updated Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The updated shoreline regulations go into effect on Monday October 30, 2017.

After this date, a pre-application meeting is required prior to submittal of Shoreline Substantial Development Permits, Shoreline Conditional Use Permits and Shoreline Variances. Information about the pre-application process may be found here: sanjuanco.com/1301/Pre-Application-Assistance

DOE’s approval will be published on October 25, 2017, in the Journal of the San Juans and the Islands Sounder. This publication begins a sixty day appeal period. Appeals must be submitted to the Growth Management Hearings Board, PO Box 40953, Olympia, WA, 98504.

Until incorporated into the County code, the updated Shoreline Master Plan consists of two ordinances (and associated exhibits), Ordinance 1-2016 and Ordinance 11-2017. Ordinance 11-2017 amended some of the provisions in Ordinance 1-2016.
