||| FROM BRENDAN for DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT |||
Note: Current positive case numbers are available online at the County Case Count Page. As indicated on that page, these numbers are only updated after case confirmation is complete, usually daily. It is possible that other information sources in community may be quicker to report on new cases, but ensuring privacy and accuracy is critical for this official information source.
Since the last update on Friday Dec 25, total cases in San Juan County have increased from 78 to 79. The new case is on Orcas Island.
ORCAS ISLAND
The new case on Orcas has resulted in one case being actively monitored on Orcas at this time. Transmission for this case appears to be from a Christmas gathering.
LOPEZ ISLAND
There are no positive cases being actively monitored on Lopez Island at this time.
SAN JUAN ISLAND
There are no positive cases being actively monitored on San Juan Island at this time.
OVERALL PICTURE:
San Juan County Health & Community Services put on two COVID immunization clinics on Orcas and San Juan Islands this week, vaccinating approximately 100 first responders and healthcare workers. Clinics will continue next week and beyond, focusing on the vaccination of emergency response and healthcare personnel, and residents and staff of long term care facilities.
Happy New Year!

Thanks, Brendan, as always for keeping us informed on a timely basis. Was the Christmas gathering believed to have been the source of the current active Orcas case a gathering on Orcas or elsewhere?
Based on 516 tests since December 11 and only 8 positives, the County positivity rating for December 11 to January 1 is 1.55+-0.55 percent. Pretty damned good, especially when compared with what’s happening on the mainland. And Orcas Island must be much better, since we’ve had only one case in that time span. The rest were on San Juan Island.
BRENDAN, I echo Janice’s wish to have as much info as possible without giving away confidentiality. These facts help us monitor our own actions.
I also wonder, throughout this infectious period how many people the contact tracers have identified and who have had to be quarantined., and for how long. When the sick person has contracted COVID off-island, is this information shared with the off-island contacts? Have any of the 79 “cases” had to be hospitalized? If so, where did they go? It’s interesting to note that, if none were hospitalized does it tell us anything about the environment we’re living in? Our life-style? This is a fertile situation for someone to do a lot of interesting research about San Juan County.
Michael, I never agree with you.. except this time..
You nailed the Elephant in the room. SAN JUAN CO has exemplified excellence through this pandemic. Not by evading the issue, but letting life move forward with accountability. I am awestruck at the grass root efforts this community has maintained and endured!
As an employer and an individual connected in my own small way to soo many moving parts, I’m soo proud of our County Tribe. Let the numbers reflect our culture.
I like facts, and our facts speak volumes of each and every one of us.
It’s a New Year, lets embrace the best!
Yes, it’s pretty astonishing, what we’ve accomplished. Too bad we cannot bottle and sell it on the mainland. But whatever we’re doing, we can’t let up.
Hi Margot and Janice – gathering was on the mainland. We didn’t have that information originally. Thank you!
Thanks, Brendan, for this additional, helpful information.
