A new group has been formed to help the Orcas Island School District music teachers, called the Music Boosters Group.
The Boosters assist with set-up and tear-down at concerts, grading papers, providing hospitality for visiting artists and groups –in short, whatever the music teachers could use help with.
The group is now preparing to host the Mariachi Huenachi band. Twice named Grand Champion in the national Mariachi Spectacular competition, Mariachi Huenachi is based at Wenatchee High School. This spirited band of over 2 dozen young musicians will perform the traditional mariachi tunes of Mexico at 7:30 p.m. at the Orcas Center. on Feb. 27.
The Boosters also plan to assist with the March 1 Music Advocacy Group Benefit Concert.
Those interested in joining the Music Boosters can contact teachers Pamela Wright and Lizz Hanks, or call Marian O’Brien at 376-1402, or emmail marian@bokubooks.com

Friday, Feb. 27 in the Home Ec room at the Orcas Island Junior High School : Dinner for 60 Mariachi Huenachi Band high school students, along with Orcas high school students.
The Band will perform for an all-school assembly at 2pm that day. At 5 p.m. we will serve dinner.
Tasks for this event:
1. At 3:00 we’d like help setting up the Home Ec room for dinner.
Setting tables, washing salad greens, pouring drinks, etc.
2. Afterwards, help cleaning up the room. About 6:30 dinner will be completed.
Saturday, Feb 28 and Sunday, March 1, at the Old School Gym: Set-up and load-in and load-out of instruments and stage settings for Annual MAG Benefit Concert.
This Annual Concert is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the school music program. The Community Band, The Choral Society, Island Sinfonia and this year 5th and 6th grade string players and choir will perform, along with middle and high school students who play with the Band and Sinfonia.
Tasks for this event:
1. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, we need about 10 able bodies to help move in equipment, and to set up chairs. This will take about 1-2 hours.
2. On Sunday after the event, this is MOST IMPORTANT! We want to show our appreciation for our community musicians who give their time to perform at this concert. We can do this by helping them to carry out their instruments, to help disassemble the staging and carry it out,
to take down the chairs, move the piano back into the music room, etc.
We would like the musicians to attend the reception being held for all to enjoy.
Please email or call Marian O’Brien with any questions and offers you
