from Lin McNulty, Actors Theater of Orcas Island
In July, Actors Theater of Orcas Island put out a call for monologues to be incorporated into a production entitled, “The Abortion Monologues.” Response has been overwhelming with nearly a dozen submissions so far, from men as well as women.
Along with those submissions has been an outcry from local writers to extend the deadline—after all, it’s been a busy summer. The new deadline is October 1, 2013.
As stated initially, we are looking for all points of view on this topic.
Once we have everyone’s work, all the writers will gather to have a “table read.” One of the things we will be looking for, and wanting writers’ assistance with, is a way we can weave and inter-weave the monologues into a full evening. This process will probably take most of the winter as we write, re-write, edit our pieces, and, yes, you may submit more than one.
Auditions will be held in the spring for performance in mid-summer. Writers will not read their own works. It is our experience that an actor will find something in a monologue that the writer didn’t even know was there; that is where the magic happens!
Please submit your monologue as a PDF or Word document to Lin McNulty via email, or call 376-1003 with any questions.
