Quick, what’s the most unusual use for an orange traffic cone?
If you’re Joe “MacGyver” Gaydos, a traffic cone makes a perfect anesthesia mask for doping down a 255 pound rehabilitated Stellar Sea Lion.
Last week, Joe provided anesthesia and vet care as Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and the Department of Fish and Wildlife prepared to release Mojo, a young Steller sea lion pup found last February, stranded and emaciated on a beach on Washington’s outer coast. The team attached a satellite transmitter to Mojo and we’re now tracking him on our website just same way we’ve tracked Western Grebes, harbor seal pups, and Sandy, the rehabilitated harbor seal that was drowned in derelict fishing line.
In only 7 days Mojo’s already traveled 310 km north and appears to be heading to Tofino. Visit the SeaDoc website to keep tabs on Mojo’s travels and to see photos and videos of his release: seadocsociety.org
