Zackarya Leck chisels the finishing touches on a pergola made from salvaged lumber.

Zackarya Leck has added wood construction from  to his eight-year career as an iron smith. His “Hand-Hewn Lumber” offers builders and architects a local alternative of environmentally-sensitive material for building projects.

Lumber such as the timbers used in the pergola pictured above can often be obtained for a lower cost, Leck says.

He obtained the wood used in the pergola project from trees that had been flooded in the construction of a road.

“Just to salvage them was a big deal,” Leck says, “And the finished product is about as ‘green’ as you could want, because there’s no industrial milling.”

Leck uses traditional, hand-held, human-powered tools.

One of his clients, Marcia Spees, praises Leck as an artist, craftsman and inventor.

Leck can be reached at 376-4243, or at Zack_leck@yahoo.com.
