— from the family of Robert Vietzke —
Robert (“Bob”) Eugene Vietzke, 77, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Friday, December 2, in Othello WA. His son was by his side.
Born in Ellensburg, WA on April 7, 1939, Bob was the son of Robert and Hazel (Richeson) Vietzke. He was the middle of three children all born close in age; with his brother Jerry being a year older and sister Shirley Jean a year younger.
He lived in Ellensburg until 1950 when the family moved to Othello. After graduating from Othello High School in 1957, Bob entered the Navy where he served active duty until July 1961. He served his last year on the carrier Coral Sea in the Pacific Ocean. This is where he started his love affair with the water.
Upon returning state side, he attended Washington State University where he was a walk-on to their football team. He played nose tackle for the Cougs and enjoyed talking about the Apple Cup games especially the 1963 game. He graduated from WSU with a degree in Education in 1965. He met Sandy Gray while at college and they married in November of 1967. They lived in Seattle for a short while before settling on Orcas Island in the San Juan’s in 1969. In 1971, the couple welcomed their only son Christopher whom he adored.
Bob was in construction when he first moved to the island. The first project he did there was cleaning up Moran State Park after the big storm of 1971. He did construction for 6 or so years until he bought a tugboat. Most of his time on Orcas was spent doing tugboat and crane work all over the island. He also did jobs as a Charter Skipper and a stint packing fish in Alaska. He was a man who enjoyed odd jobs, informal days and a love of being outdoors.
In his spare time over the years, he enjoyed riding his BMW motorcycles, sailing, learning to fly (getting both his private and commercial licenses), cheering on his Cougs, traveling to foreign places and spending time with his family and many friends.
Bob is survived by his son Chris (Sally) Vietzke and grandchildren, Blake, Travis and Emma all of Ellensburg, his sister Shirley Jean McCullough of Othello, and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, his brother, and a niece precede him in death.
He will be greatly missed and thought of often, but he will live on forever in our stories and memories of this wonderful man.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time on the island. This will be a time for people to share their memories, hugs and laughs, and celebrate life just as Bob would have wanted.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s name to the Orcas Island Senior Center P.O. Box 1653, Eastsound, WA 98245) or to a favorite charity of your choice.

Bob, you were a one-of-a-kind, loved by all. Always enjoyed the visits we had with you at Enzo’s, most recently, and at all school functions while our boys were growing up together.
If heaven has bikes, you’ve got the most badass one there. Happy travels, dear friend!

Abundant good-will and easy camaraderie. A great neighbor, to boot.
We’ve lost a precious island character.
I miss you, Bob, you beautiful big-hearted guy!
Oh, it pains me to hear of Bob’s death! Bob was a very rare person who, when he saw you, was genuinely happy to see you. His gift was his heartfelt ability to connect with people, to make a person feel welcomed, really appreciated and respected. Bob was a kind, sincere man who lit up my life on many a day when I unexpectedly ran into him in town. I will miss his amazing Mustache too! Such a precious Blessing he was to Orcas! A True Islander in the very best sense of the word! You are flying high over the water Bob! Fly with the Eagles! We love you!

I am Samson, the black lab, you showered with those great treats. Some might think I liked you because you always treated me. Not true. You were a great dude with a kind heart. Orcas won’t be the same without you!
I think it’s time for me to start making copper bracelets …
We’ll miss you, Bob. Your great smile, infectious laugh, generosity. Rest in peace.

Bobs connection to making copper bracelets goes back away in San Juan islands tradition. Glenn ‘ Little Wolf’ Chester was a colorful well liked and very popular character who for years made copper bracelets on Stuart island to many thousands of people up until his death in 1986. Many stories flowed from littlewolf as he made bracelets. John Wayne and Betty Ford wore them and were his friends. Womens bracelets were circular and mens were oval. Through the times and May Day festivals in the 70’s on Stuart Bob made friends with little wolf. Bob carried on this tradition as colorfully and lovingly as was Little wolf. We will all miss Bobs stories.
If anyone wants to know more about Little wolf or the copper bracelets that bob made:

Great smiles in greeting, bear hugs in welcoming, readiness to help when needed… So sad we lost this dear friend and the wonderful twinkle in his eyes.
no one i can think of to fill those shoes, big heart and a larger spirit if orcas had some one to represent us this is the man.WELL,WELL DONE BOB.
Crow Valley will miss you too, but I’ll think of you often as I enjoy that big chair you hauled home for me from the senior center! Thanks for being BOB.
“Guinness” the big brown lab (barking for you from the onset) could always pinpoint your voice, the roar of your BMW motorcycle or spot your blue pickup (anywhere on Orcas) much sooner than I ever could. He was always waiting in anticipation for the treat he was about to receive that you would ALWAYS deliver to him. Thanks for that Bob and all you did for us! We’re gonna really, really miss you!
Mike, Tina, Soren and Guinness.
Gonna miss you brother. You’re a good one.
Bob: Friday often asks us where you are. Someone drove by in a blue pickup the other day. Or did I imagine it? Your warm heart and cheerful ways are greatly missed. Antoinette, Vance & Friday
