During the summer, Orcas School PTSA is offering two special enrichment school courses for children in grades four through six at summers’ end.
“Counting on a Small Planet – Activities for Exploring Environmental and Cultural Mathematics” will be offered from July 6th through the 10th .
A second class will follow: “Math Around the World”, featuring Math Games from four continents, will be offered from July 13th to July 17th.
The courses will be taught by Marta Nielson, who has worked at both Salmonberry School and the Orcas Island School District. A master’s level teacher, she has 18 years combined experience in both school and youth group teaching environments and a special love for getting kids excited about math.
Both classes are open to all island youth that will enter grades 4 to 6 in the fall. They will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Orcas School. Cost per session is $85 and signing up for both sessions entitles students to the reduced rate of $140.
Registration flyers can be picked up at the Orcas Elementary School office between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. until June 25th. For an emailed form or questions please contact either Barb Skotte, PTSA president at bskotte@yahoo.com or 376-3930 or Marta Nielson at mnielson@orcas.k12.wa.us.
