From the San Juan County Economic Development Council

The San Juan County Economic Development Council is pleased to announce that nine islanders have been selected for scholarships for marine tech training at Skagit Valley College’s Center of Excellence in Marine Technology.

Awards were made to islanders on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Island, after review by a scholarship selection committee comprised of Mike Ahrenius, Jensen’s Marina/Port of Friday Harbor Commissioner; Jennifer Meng, Islands Marine Center; and Betsy Wareham, West Sound Marina.

Recipients included: Christopher Caldwell, Lopez; Dale Downs, San Juan; Christian Falls, San Juan; Hans Hellman, Lopez; James McCormick, San Juan; Kyle Prescott, San Juan; Jason Schible, San Juan; Brandon Soland, San Juan; Jacob White, Orcas.

The scholarships were funded by the Rural Business Enterprise (RBE) program of the USDA, through a grant given to the San Juan County Economic Development Council. The RBE program was created to provide adults with job skills training in rural areas. The scholarships will pay for tuition for marine engine repair training and composite technology training and certification.

The San Juan County Economic Development Council (EDC) strives to strengthen and diversify the economy of San Juan County. We believe a strong economy builds a strong community.
