From San Juan County Marine Resources Advisory Committee

Are you serious about protecting our shorelines?

Do you want to learn more about our marine environments?

Do you want to help collect the data needed to document “no net loss”?

If so, come join the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee in a 2-day Citizen Science workshop!

During the workshop you will learn to collect scientifically valid and legally defensible samples of water, sediments, and biological tissues from intertidal areas throughout the county. Not only do we need these data to document the success of “no net loss” as required in the County’s new SMP (Shoreline Master Plan), but we also must face the threats of environmental catastrophe such as a major oil or coal spill in our coastal waters. We need those baseline data today — and you can help!

The use of citizen science volunteers is being recognized as an important link between ecological research and environmental policy. We need, want, and will use your expertise!

Thus the goals of this workshop are to involve YOU to

§ collect pre-incident samples to establish the baseline for “no net loss”
§ be part of a cadre of citizen volunteers to assist incident response teams
§ contribute to scientific research projects targeted to address specific issues in environmental decision-making.
