||| FROM B.J. ARNOLD for ORCAS ARTWORKS |||
The Artworks is excited to present our October featured artist Marilee Whitehouse Holm. Marilee, a long time Orcas resident, began “doing art” in high school. She continued to pursue her love of art by completing BFA in painting at University of Washington and further studies of encaustic at Gage Academy in Seattle.
Marilee explores her love of colors with her original encaustic pieces. Her work is often abstracted landscape composition inspired by the water and woods surrounding Orcas.
She paints on birch plywood surfaces with a somewhat unpredictable messy medium created from mixing beeswax, damar resin, powdered pigment, oil paint and metal leaf mixed, then warmed and manipulated with a butane blow torch or electric heat gun. She loves the unpredictability of this process delighting in surprising outcomes.
Drop by the Artworks in during October to see her newest creations. Orcas Island Artworks, 11 Pt. Lawrence Road, Olga, WA Summer hours 10-5.

So proud of my long time friend
and high school classmate!
Beautiful work as always.

Marilee and I were best friends in the 5th grade! I remember her being chosen by Mr. Bright to sit on a chair in front of our class so we could all learn to draw her! I always loved the picture I drew of my best friend! And proud to see her become a famous artist herself!!
I am so pleased for Marilee!
She was a highschool friend way back when!
I remember taking art class with her. Apparently, I did more talking than artwork.
Marilee worked at her art.
Marilee was a long time patient of mine in Seattle, often traveling from Orcas to see me. I have one of her beautiful encaustics in my home. You never tire of looking at the gorgeous colors and design.
