15th annual Orcas Center/Island Market/Red Rabbit Farm Golf Classic. Begins at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast. 11 a.m. tee time with lunch at the turn. Immediately following the game, there will be an awards ceremony and hearty buffet reception catered by Red Rabbit Farm.  Registration is $125 and includes greens fee, goodie bag, continental breakfast, lunch, reception buffet, hosted wine and beer bar, and a raffle ticket. United Way Day of Caring, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join members of Lions, Kiwanis and Odd Fellows 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the registration tent next to Orcas Center.  United Way board members will provide coffee and cookies for the cleanup crews on the school’s Vitality Trail, at Orcas Center and the Senior Center.Call 378-4121 for further information.

Orcas Viking volleyball team plays its home opener on Saturday vs. Seattle’s University Prep.  Varsity match starts at 1 p.m. and JV follows at 2:30 p.m.  In our first match of the season we’re going up against a bigger, non-league school.  Comfortable seating is available in the new gym, so come on out and help us “Rock the Box!”

Cascade Summit Bike Challenge. Riders can choose between destinations: the Cascade Falls Trailhead – 1 mile, the Mountain Lake Shelter – 2.2 miles, and the Mt. Constitution Summit – 5.7 miles. Registration cost for the ride is $30 per individual; kids 12 and under pay $15.Check-in for the ride is at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Cascade Lake Day Use Shelter in Moran State Park. “Poisoned Waters,” Hedrick Smith’s two-hour PBS documentary on Puget Sound and Chesapeake Bay, is being shown at the Orcas Center, starting at 4:30 pm.  Supper will be served between the two hours.
