I have been thinking about how we grow connection to community.
For me, volunteering has been the best route to learning more about the island and meeting more local residents. I served on the Doe Bay Community Association Board, as an EMT for 22 years and now have a weekly shift at the Food Bank, bagging groceries and restocking shelves. All of these roles have given me the opportunity to meet islanders, to provide some comfort or a smile, and to gain a better understanding of the needs and opportunities facing the community.
It also turns out that my fellow volunteers are an interesting and generous bunch. People who like to give back or pay it forward are pretty fun to hang out with.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, there are several good opportunities. The Orcas Community Resource Center is looking for Mentors for their Financial Literacy program, the Food Bank has shifts available, and Island Rides has openings for drivers. The Library also has a robust volunteer program. There are Board and Committee service opportunities with numerous organizations. If you are interested in learning more, reach out to me, I would be happy to help you connect.
It appears there is a new wave of Covid happening on the island. Many active cases reported and likely more that have gone unreported. May be wise to mask up again.
There is plenty of free fun to be had outdoors this weekend. The Fly In is happening at the airport, and the Chamber Music Festival is offering community concerts in several neighborhoods on Sunday.
Hope to see you out and about….with a mask perhaps.
