Talking to Plants About People – Reading Orcas’ Cultural Landscapes
The public is invited to attend the Madrona Club of Orcas Island’s Founders’ Day Celebration on Thursday June 10th in the Madrona Room of Orcas Center.
Lopez botanist Madrona Murphy will present a talk on how human activity on Orcas has shaped our island in ways that can be used to “read” the history of the landscape.
Murphy’s presentation, “Talking Plants to People: Reading Orcas’ Cultural Landscapes”, will highlight unique plant communities on Orcas and present evidence of extensive pre-Contact agriculture by Coast Salish families. She will also touch on how learning about past land stewardship can inform current conservation and farming practices.
The Madrona Club, established in 1906, is one of the oldest extant organizations on Orcas. Murphy’s talk begins at 1 p.m. and will last about an hour. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome!
