I’ve done it, a sequel to Beyond the Human Realm. Meet In the Realm of the Whales, a novel of transformation, tragedy, and triumph.

Beyond the Human Realm explored the life of Makai, a captive male orca released into the wild, and the people and whales instrumental in integrating him into complex orca society. That novel won two national awards and has consistently received 5-star reviews on Amazon.

In the Realm of the Whales follows the trajectory of Makai’s lost daughter Marina, a whale born in captivity and content to be there. A well-intentioned benefactor purchases Marina from her captors and enlists two Indigenous teenagers with orca-clan roots in an effort to repatriate Marina with her wild relatives. Despite Marina’s intransigence, the teens—helped by Marina’s biologic family and two orca researchers—convince her to decide between captivity and freedom.

Marina chooses freedom, and the real trouble begins.

In the Realm of the Whale’s is intended to be a stand-alone story. You don’t necessarily have to have read the first book to appreciate the second, although I’ve sprinkled enough breadcrumbs to reward anyone who remembers some details.

Available at the Lopez Bookshop and the corporate on-line sites in paper and e-book. And, of course, profits continue to be donated to orca conservation.
