Local favorites sing and play in the Local Artist Showcase on the OffCenter Stage of Orcas Center on Sunday, December 2 at 7: 30 pm. Come and listen to the talent of Corey Wiscomb and Robb Eagle, Bridget O’Toole, Madi Jane West and Grace McCune’s Rock on the Rock Adult Singers.
The seed of Corey Wiscomb and Robb Eagle’s musical union was sown when they met at the Guitar Emporium in Seattle. Robb was the owner of this unique music store, which sells wonderfully crafted guitars made by local and regional luthiers. The music these singer/songwriters have been creating together is an acoustic blend of Blues, Country, Bluegrass and Folk incorporating various guitar techniques including fingerstyle, flatpicking, and rhythmic strumming, with original lyrics and two part vocals.
Raised on Orcas Island, Bridget O’Toole is a singer-songwriter who writes about her experiences and her observations of life. While her musical inspirations are always expanding, some of her steady influences include Billie Holiday, Gillian Welsh, and Taj Mahal. The songs of her grandfather and brother help to shape her sound as well. Over the last year she’s been performing solo and with backup on Orcas Island; you may have seen her at The Lower Tavern or Doe Bay Cafe hosting open mic.
Music is fourteen year old singer/songwriter Madi Jane West’s first love. She recently moved to Orcas from Austin, Texas and has switched from violin to acoustic guitar to accompany her songs. Madi Jane currently studies with Carolyn Cruso, Grace McCune, and Anita Orne. She focuses on melody which she delivers with a clear vocal style.
Local singer/songwriter Grace McCune started the Rock on the Rock Adult Singers several years ago. Since its inception the ensemble has sung selections from the Beatles, ABBA, Queen, Leonard Cohen, Madonna, Bon Jovi and most recently Motown and a medley from the musical Grease. About half of the members have been singing in Rock on the Rock since its inception. There will be 15-20 singers in the group offering a program which will include eclectic rock and pop holiday music.
Tickets for this OffCenter Local Artist Showcase are $15 for adults, $11 for students ($2 off for Orcas Center Members) and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon- 4 pm.
