||| FROM SAM GAILEY for ORCAS ISLAND LIBRARY |||

The Orcas Island Public Library is inviting community members age 60 and older who live with a disability—as well as caregivers of older adults with disabilities—to a free community forum this Thursday, August 27, at 6 p.m.

The library recently received grant funding to make improvements that will better serve seniors with disabilities.

“Before moving forward, the library wants to hear directly from the people who use its services—or would like to use them more easily,” says library volunteer Ayn Gailey, who will lead the conversation. “What makes the library difficult to use? What would make a visit easier, more comfortable or more welcoming?

The library welcomes adults 60+ experiencing any kind of disability or accessibility challenge, including hearing loss, vision impairment, mobility limitations, memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, as well as those who use wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids. Family members and caregivers of seniors with disabilities are also encouraged to participate.

The informal forum will last less than one hour. Complimentary food from Westside Kitchen will be served, and participants will also receive a small token of appreciation.

The library hopes to gather approximately 20 community members so that a range of experiences and perspectives can be heard.

Because food will be ordered for participants, RSVPs are requested.

To RSVP and participate, email sgailey@orcaslibrary.org.
