Hospice is a centuries-old French word we know hovers in the air with every diagnosis of serious disease. Coupled with  “palliative’  it acknowledges a choice of care for the last days of our lives. Both words were in my mind when I chose my Orcas home, reaffirming my goal to end my days in a familiar room with a cherished view.

I am writing this letter to say how reassured I am that this goal is not only possible, but is being “lived” to the fullest by others on Orcas right now. More importantly this is  a letter of appreciation for the privilege of getting to know Orcas Volunteer  Hospice personnel, Mollie Roberts and Suzie Rose,  and many other wonderful caregivers.

I recently shared last days with a dear friend and recipient of their care. Warmth and laughter were present at bedside, and coming from it. Pain was managed, nutrition sustained. Every emotional and physical support was offered to both the patient and concerned friends.

Exploring this alternative to a distant hospital is one of the last gifts of choice we are given. How fortunate we are  to have  Hospice  available, personifying the quiet and solace that first drew us to the island and competently and compassionately walking  us the last mile home.
