The Orcas PTSA Board urges you to sign the petition (available at locations described below) to put the formation of an Orcas Park & Recreation (taxing) District on the November ballot.  San Juan Island has such a district, and consequently has stable funding for youth and community activities at a much greater level than Orcas Island does.

The PTSA Board is very supportive of this idea, including for the reasons outlined below from petition supporters and more fully described in the attached “talking points”.

Petitions to sign can be found at the Farmer’s Market, Chamber of Commerce Office, Eastsound Sporting Goods, Orcas Golf Course, lobby of the public library, and from sponsors, Kevin and Nancy O’Brien, and others concerned with supporting and sustaining a vibrant Orcas Rec program.

Statement from petition supporters:
A group of citizens,

interested in ensuring that we have stable funding for community and youth activities, is looking to get 600 signatures by July 27th to put a potential Orcas Parks and Rec District on the ballot.

Quickly:

1)  The petition only allows for the CREATION of an Orcas Parks and Rec district to go on the ballot.

2)  There will also be candidates running for the Parks and Rec commissioner positions.

3)  THERE WILL BE NO NEW TAX on the ballot in November.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this important issue and, hopefully, for signing the petition!

Barb Skotte,
PTSA President
