As the deadline for payment of property taxes approaches, it would be helpful for property owners to know what sources of relief exist for those who have lost their incomes during this national emergency and how the use of existing programs might affect qualification for federal programs. For example:
Will the County be waiving interest and penalties on unpaid property taxes? The effective interest rate for many entities is now 0%. Penalties for late payment seem particularly inappropriate.
Will the state be reducing the interest rate it charges for its relief program? https://www.sanjuanco.com/1653/Deferral-for-Homeowners
What other actions are state and County governments taking to relieve the property tax burden during this crisis and how do they interact with available federal relief programs?
It is also an excellent opportunity to provide information about existing relief for the aged, disabled and low-income populations.
