— from San Juan Island Yacht Club Race Committee —

The San Juan Island Yacht Club would like to thank the Washington State Ferry boat Captains who carefully maneuvered around and sometimes through the fleet of racing sailboats on Saturday. As is often the case, the annual Shaw Island Classic sailboat race presented racers with the challenge of maintaining forward motion with light winds and, sometimes, adverse currents.

Sailors, some who may not have local knowledge, are advised to stay out of commercial traffic lanes and of course, no skipper would intentionally put boat or crew in danger. This around Shaw Island race, however, includes narrow passages such as Harney Channel and Wasp Passage that make avoiding collision with other boats and rocks one of the many challenges. So, thank you WSF Captains for helping keep our sailors safe on the water while racing.
