The second annual Rubber Duck “Qwack Wace” was an inspiring success, thanks to the generous donations and support from businesses and individuals alike. I would like to extend a special thank you to the following sponsors for supporting race ducks: Ace Hardware, Brown Bear Baking, Country Corner, Forest Ceramic Gallery, Island Market, Girl Meets Dirt, Kerri’s Island Cuts, Laughing Cat Designs, Mount Baker Center, Naan Stop, New Leaf Cafe, Office Cupboard, Olga Symphony, Orcas Arts & Gifts, Orcas Island Library, Orcas Leather Goods, Orcas Museum, Orcas Senior Center, Outlook Inn, Shearwater Adventures, and Wildlife Cycles.

Additionally, I am grateful to the many individuals who donated, sponsored ducks, or volunteered their time and effort. A special heartfelt thanks to volunteers Mark King, who designed and built the Qwack Wace racetrack, and Rob Wilson, who helped assemble and disassemble this monumental structure.

The event raised nearly $3,000, bringing us closer to our $50,000 goal. This amount will enable the Orcas Island Library to support up to $2,000 annually for science programming, equipment, and books, in perpetuity. The fund was established in 2022 in memory of Kenneth Gibbs, a respected figure in the gamma-ray astrophysics community and a Library volunteer known by most islanders simply as “Ken.” I think Ken would have been thrilled by a fund that fosters a passion for science in children and youth.
