I encourage all OPALCO users to attend their “Energy Round Table-Member Generator Rate Discussion” on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 5 – 6 p.m.

This is an important discussion held by OPALCO staff to hear what the  members think about a proposed change to the rate structure for members who generate power (mostly solar).

I am always trying to see the ripple effects or unintended consequences about decisions that are made and it appears that the mandatory purchase back program has created a situation.   Here are a few things that I know that I think we all need to think about in trying to solve this situation.

  1.  Our current base rate is almost $50
  2. Actual cost to OPALCO for our service to homes is about $100
  3. OPALCO has to purchase excess solar power from customers but they can not use it/or store it
  4. More and more people are selling power back so …… we have a budget/business problem.

What is fair for the non solar co-op members, and what is fair for solar owners ? It’s complicated for sure. I am looking forward to hearing the discussion from the membership and staff.
