I recently joined the Board of Directors of the Orcas Senior Center for a very self-serving reason: I share my home with a person with dementia and I am the main caregiver. There needs to be more services on Orcas, such as respite care, for the many people like me who are caring 24/7 for a loved one who has a debilitating ailment.

Our Senior Center is very aware of this growing need and has a plan to initiate programs that could make a real difference in the lives of many. To make this a reality, more space is needed and that is why the Senior Center has embarked on a capital campaign to acquire ownership of the entire building. (Currently San Juan County owns 49%.)

The Senior Center is not funded by local or state government, so it is up to islanders to make this happen. Make a tax-deductible donation online to http://tinyurl.com/OSCBuildingFund, or send a check to the Orcas Senior Center at PO Box 1653, Eastsound, WA 98245. We should all be able to live and age well on Orcas.
