||| FROM DOUG MARSHALL |||

Last Sunday, more than 75 friends of Dave Shinstrom gathered on the Orcas Center lawn, for a “Thank You” celebration and a chance to wish Dave well in his retirement. This event had been planned for 2021, but was postponed due to Covid.

Ken Speck, who had worked with Dave on the Orcas Family Health Center Board of Directors, entertained the crowd with a summary of the clinic’s history and some stories that illustrated Dr. Shinstrom’s dedication. This included a special round of applause for Paco, Dave’s caregiving dog, who seemed pleased to be present and was able to renew many acquaintances. Many former patients spoke about their memories of working with Dave. There were lots of laughs, and (of course) a few tears.

The event was planned by former Clinic manager Aimee Johnson and Michell Marshall. Aimee recalled how Dr. Shinstrom had helped her obtain a college degree that later allowed her to qualify for her current position at the combined Medical Center. Michell described the Guest of Honor as “the best doctor I have ever had!”

Dave himself seemed very appreciative of the kind words and the great turnout. He recalled growing up in the Seattle area and attending Camp Orkila when he was 8 years old. After high school, college at Whitman, Med School in Cincinnati, and an internship in Maine, he returned to Washington to practice medicine – first at Forks, and then here on Orcas.

He explained that he closed the clinic after 18 years, when the Orcas Island Hospital District was created. He
described the Hospital District as a great thing for our community and the best way to assure a sustainable medical clinic on the Island. He drew an enthusiastic round of applause for his heartfelt statement about the importance of health care availability for all.

There was music by Ron Myers, lots of food, sufficient quantities of beer and wine, and a Great Big Chocolate Cake baked personally by Chef Christina Orchid. A good time was had by all.

Many thanks to The Orcasonian for helping publicize this event, which fittingly honored one of Orcas Island’s Leading Citizens!
