I urge your vote for Brian Ehrmantraut for position 2 on the Orcas Island Fire Commission (SJC Fire Protection District No. 2).
Brian would bring to the commission his experience with Orcas Fire both as an EMT and volunteer firefighter. But more important right now might be his extensive service on several commissions and boards over the years. He understands both the powers and restraints an effective commission must exercise. That is, a commission may outline policy and play a role in selecting the chief and key administrators. Beyond that, restraint is demonstrated by being hands-off as those selected, and their hires and volunteers, are left to carry out the day-to-day operations of the department.
The current commission has broken the golden rule of commissions and boards by becoming itself the issue. The focus instead should be on the emergency medical response and fire suppression service the department offers the island. Brian will help bring about the change to right the course.
