Now is not the time for inexperience or popularity contests. With two out of three County Council members leaving after only one term and a new county manager stepping in, we are at a critical juncture. What we need now more than ever is institutional knowledge, strong relationships in Olympia and between the islands, and bold ideas to ensure our county’s long-term sustainability and success. We need someone who can hit the ground running on day one—and that’s Rick Hughes. His extensive experience is exactly why he’s endorsed by so many in local government.
Rick Hughes has already served two successful terms, and he’s ready to serve us again. His experience and deep connections will be vital to helping our county stabilize and prosper. Now, as an empty nester with his son off to college, Rick has the perfect opportunity to focus his full attention on the needs of our county.
As a family in the construction business, allow me a quick metaphor. If you inherit an old house that needs rewiring, you wouldn’t hire an uncertified electrician or one who has never worked on a house before. You’d choose someone qualified, who knows how to navigate complex safety issues and financial hurdles. Similarly, we need someone who knows how to keep the lights on in our county—someone with the experience to guide us through uncertain times.
Rick Hughes is that person. Over the past several months, Rick has been visiting all the San Juan Islands—often weekly—listening to residents and understanding how needs have evolved since his last term. He’s been present in our communities, answering tough questions, volunteering at local events, hosting state leaders, and engaging with stakeholders across a wide range of issues. His actions speak for themselves.
Rick’s dedication to our community goes beyond politics. His nonprofit work and leadership roles—on the Rotary, Health Council, Farmers Market, Land Bank, and more—showcase his commitment to service and his deep understanding of our needs.
Rick has demonstrated resilience and grace through life’s challenges, and he has always been there for us in times of need. He was instrumental in administering over 5,000 COVID vaccinations in our county—just one example of his willingness to step up and help.
Now it’s our turn to stand up and support him!!
Please join me and Matthew Laslo in voting for Rick Hughes for County Council, District #2.
