— from Steven Jung —
I write to support the candidacy of Art Lange for Commissioner of the proposed Orcas Island Public Hospital District. Having known and worked with Art for over 15 years, I believe he represents the prototype for an excellent Public Hospital District Commissioner.
To encapsulate this recommendation, I believe Art has:
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
- Capacity to understand complex organizational and business arrangements/relationships
- Sound judgment
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Long history of working collaboratively and harmoniously with others
- Willingness to devote sufficient time and personal commitment to the district’s work
- Lack of any conflicts of interest, especially with regard to existing island medical providers
- Understanding of the responsibilities inherent in serving the public as an elected official
Should the proposed Orcas public healthcare district be approved by the island voters on 24 April, and I hope it will, Art will serve us well.

Yes, I agree, Art is an excellent choice.
Assuming the proposed Orcas Island Public Hospital District is voted in, and I sincerely hope it is, Art Lange would be a marvelous Commissioner! Both have my vote!
I seem to recall Art Lange, at one of the first public meetings, talking about a tax levy of $0.35/1000 at one of the meetings. He had lots of reservations about this number and said so.
Now I am hearing levy rates of $0.60/1000. Lopez’s levy was the full $0.75/1000. Are we headed their also?
What happened?
Are we going to see all the available funds collected and spent?
Are we already seeing mission creep?
Having read the candidates’ statements and Tom Eversole’s very fine gathering of data in support thereof, and now finding myself somewhat impressed by the potential stewardship of this project, I’m left with two impressions both of which are reconcilable.
While it will be a tall order indeed to make this work, the Island’s fine talent would be have to be the secret sauce in any successful recipe. Knowing how acutely needed a healthcare solution is on Orcas Island, despite any misgivings I might otherwise have, I, too, plan to vote in favor of the PHD initiative.
I very much look forward to its success.
I want to add my support for Art Lange here as a convenient forum to let voters know of my support for him as a PHD commissioner. I have met with Art and have read his published 11 points as to what he would do if elected. I agree with most of his points and am encouraged by his “pledge” to conduct business in an open and transparent manner”. Also that he supports assisting ” all existing primary/urgent care practices”.
His credentials are excellent and his openness is refreshing. Please join me in supporting Art Lange as one of our OHD commissioners. Bruce Orchid, Westsound
