— from Martin Lund —

In the immortal words of Nancy Reagan, “It takes a village to raise a jazz festival” rings so true after the 2nd Annual Orcas Island Jazz Festival closed its final curtain. So many villagers volunteered and took part with random acts of kindness to make this year so successful. As a result, this event has a chance to grow and become stronger next year by adding singing and instrumental workshops and events throughout the year.

There are some wonderful people who need to be thanked publicly.

Joe Symons, Prime Minister and volunteer coordinator who spent way more time than he should have. Kristen Wilson, our Minister of Propaganda who managed our programs, advertising and general arbiter of taste, Minister of Acoustical Delight, Kevin Colomby, and our Minister of Enlightenment, Phil Burbo. A special thanks to Donna Laslo and Orcas Open Arts.

Our sponsors, Hedrick and Susan Smith, Scott and Bronwen Jones, Harvey and Gail Glasser, Galen and Birch Burghardt, Jim Connell and Susan Hull, Jeff and Mary Quinn, King and Ann Hoagland, Win Rhodes, Bruce and Marty Coffey, Roy and Laura Lundgren, Susan Kunk, James Ford Bell Foundation, Jim and Betsy Nelson, Richard and Dianne Jordan, Leslie Seaman, Harvey and Liane Olsan and Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous.

Housing for musicians provided by Jeff and Mary Quinn, Barbara Bentley and Glenn Prestwich and also Ron Claybourn and Jackie Daigle.

Other volunteers include Brian Wiese, Jacqueline Daigle, Raenya Salisbury, Didier Gincig, Gregory Books, Jean Dickerson, David Turnoy, Linda Koran, Sadie Bailey, Ezekiel Barr, Jari Brenner, Deb Darner, Dale Ely, Bill Gincig, John Laursen, Barrie Neville, Michael Riordan, Marlia Starwater, Mary Tanner, Chantelle Hildreth and Geri Turnoy. Publicity, Colleen Armstrong and Margie Doyle and The Office Cupboard.

Judging by how many Orcasians attended OI Jazz Festival this past weekend tells me that the island is ready for more jazz next year. Can’t wait! Already on it!!
