Gov. Jay Inslee, Seattle Councilmember Tammy J. Morales, Seattle Mayor Harrell’s Office, City of Seattle Office of Economic Development, Seattle Colleges, and the Seattle Maritime Academy celebrated $1 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funding released this week for sustaining Seattle Maritime Academy operations and technical maritime education in Seattle.

Councilmember Morales said the funding is critical for maintaining and supporting maritime education growth and sustaining affordability. The funding will provide opportunities for youth of color in the maritime industry.

“I’m excited to secure critical gap funding to support Seattle Colleges’ Maritime Academy and Seattle Public Schools’ Maritime Vessel Operations Program for the 2022-2023 school year,” Councilmember Morales said. “Keeping these programs operating will increase access to training for young people looking for high-paying, skilled jobs in the Maritime industry. Jobs that offer stable employment and a good career pathway.”

“Maritime is one of Washington state’s core industries but it faces an uncertain future as we grapple with a shortage of qualified mariners. SMA opens up doors for students to launch amazing career opportunities on the water and is a valued partner of our Washington State Ferries team. I appreciate everyone who has contributed to supporting the Academy’s mission of providing technical maritime education that is affordable and accessible to a diverse set of students across our state,” said Inslee.
