— from Stephanie Conner for San Juan Pubic Works —

Say “cheese!” Brandon Baney(L) of Mike Carlson Enterprises and Lewis Dickinson(R) of Island Electric document the ever-changing construction scape at Orcas Landing. Behind: Chris Connelly (L) and Chad Hoffman (R) of MCE.

An engineering technician scratches her head, and, as one and a half ton concrete blocks play leap frog with an excavator, a wall is born!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and there’s certainly no arguing that an Orcas Landing selfie doesn’t speak volumes. It’s been a month since construction began and the Landing has taken its last “before” picture. So much has happened over the past four weeks of construction at the site, and I think it’s safe to say it’s unrecognizable.

With the most dramatic of those visual changes occurring this week, we’ll see the full length of the Main Wall take shape, and it’s really the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Sure, the half-built retaining wall and temporary Jersey barriers above it have been a bit of an eyesore, but what’s more is that construction of the Main Wall signifies the eminent restoration of a stable slope and a future of possibilities for this essential public marine facility.
