In 2022, a Flight Training Scholarship from the Airhawks Flying Club was awarded to Bethany Carter. Bethany was in her sophomore year at Orcas High School (OHS) where she was an outstanding student, leader, athlete and in 2024 graduated as Valedictorian of her class.

Bethany Carter
Bethany set a goal of soloing the Club’s aircraft on her 16th birthday, the first day she would be legally eligible. On the morning of her birthday in 2022, she accomplished this and then continued on to her first class at OHS. Her next goal for her 17th birthday was passing the oral examination and practical flight test to qualify for her Private Pilot License.
Again, on the first day she would be eligible, she accomplished this in 2023. In competition with thousands of students from the entire US, Bethany qualified and received an additional scholarship from AOPA, the national pilot association, to help continue her flight training.
Bethany now attends Arizona State University (ASU) where she is majoring in Sports Science and Performance Programming. In addition to her regular undergraduate classes, she is working with the ASU Sports Performance coaches – an opportunity that allows her to work with athletes across many different collegiate sports. Presently she plans to pursue a master’s degree in strength and conditioning to become a strength coach.
Flying is still in Bethany’s future as well. When home this summer, she obtained her Flight Instrument Rating that allows her to fly in any kind of weather and operate the aircraft on instruments only. Next summer she plans to get her Commercial Rating to eventually become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI).
We at Airhawks wait to see what this talented young lady will accomplish next.
