The Orcas Community Resource Center welcomed more than 25 families to its annual Kindergarten Transition event — a warm and lively evening designed to help young islanders take their first big step into school with confidence, curiosity, and community behind them.

Hosted this year at the Camp Orkila Main Lodge, the event offered hands-on learning stations led by enthusiastic preschool and kindergarten teachers. Children explored early reading, math, art, and motor skills, while parents and caregivers took home practical, easy-to-use strategies to support learning at home.

Every child left with a backpack filled with school supplies, a Darvill’s Bookstore gift certificate, and the chance to sign up for their very first library card — a gift from the Orcas Island Library. Families capped the night with a delicious taco dinner and cookies, making space for conversation, laughter, and celebration.

“Thanks for the event! When we got home my son spent ages going through all the things in the backpack,” shared parent Karen Meng about her soon-to-be kindergartner, Jude. “He’s really excited about kindergarten… this event made it feel real!”

This no-cost gathering was made possible by ECEAP, the Orcas Community Resource Center, and a caring local donor—a reminder that on Orcas Island, every child’s bright beginning is a community effort.
