We’re excited to announce that Tony Howard of Olga turns 90 years old this August the 27th! We will honor and support her at a birthday potluck celebration to be held Sunday, August 30th at 1 o’clock p.m. in the Olga Community Club.
Ever unconventional and adventurous, our friend Tony has sustained a rich life as an islander for nearly 6 decades! Having “discovered” Orcas Island while on an archeological field trip with the UW, she moved here in her late 20’s to serve as a fire watch in the Mt. Constitution tower. She later built a cabin and homesteaded on the Dolphin Bay Road. Tony eventually settled above Buck Bay where she could launch her canoe just a short distance from her home. While the memorable raspberry vines she tended have been laid to rest, and the woodshop where she made many careful creations is no longer active, Tony is still around! She remains in constant awe of the natural world around her, the mountains in the distance, and the shifting tides. “I love it here and I never want to leave!” she passionately proclaims: “This is the place!”
Tony is one of many seniors living on Orcas Island who wishes to age in place. As several of you are aware, this can be a challenging reality. Creative community collaboration continues to be a critical piece in keeping Tony safe and happy in her own home. This birthday gathering will be a time for us to connect and there will also be opportunity to “fill the canoe” to help Tony along. We would love to see you there!
