Gottmans to speak on “Making Love Last”

Orcas Crossroads Lecture Series will host Julie Gottman Ph.D. and John Gottman Ph.D., who will present – Making Love Last – Sunday, March 10, 2013, 2:00 pm at the Orcas Center.

In “Making Love Last,” the Gottmans will explore explore the mysteries of love: Where does it come from? Why does some love last, and why does some fade? With a gift for translating scientific ideas into insightful and practical advice, the Gottmans share their research about love and what it takes to develop a trustful, intimate, and emotionally fulfilling bond.

Dr. Julie Gottman is the co-founder and Clinical Director of The Gottman Institute, and Clinical Supervisor for the Couples Together Against Violence study. A highly respected clinical psychologist, she is sought internationally by media and organizations as an expert advisor on marriage, sexual harassment and rape, domestic violence, gay and lesbian adoption, same-sex marriage, and parenting issues. She is the co-creator of the immensely popular Art and Science of Love weekend workshops for couples, and she also co-designed the national clinical training program in Gottman Couples Therapy.

Dr. John Gottman has spent decades observing the conversational patterns and biorhythms of thousands and thousands of couples. Now he applies this research to fundamental questions about trust and betrayal. Doubts are common in relationships. Partners often worry. Can I trust my partner? Am I being betrayed? How do I know for sure? Based on laboratory findings Dr. Gottman will talk about how to identify signs, behaviors, and attitudes that indicate betrayal— whether sexual or not – and will provide strategies for repairing what may seem lost or broken. With a gift for translating complex scientific ideas into insightful and practical advice, Dr. Gottman will explain how a couple can protect or recover their greatest gift – their love for one another.

Come with your questions for the Q & A session, and join us for the reception following the presentation. At the reception Darvill’s Bookstore will have John Gottman’s new book: ‘What Makes Love Last?: How to Build Trust and Avoid Betrayal’ available for sale and signing.
