The 2010 Haitian earthquake disaster had a personal connection for Orcas Island resident Rosedanie Cadet when she returned to her home in Limbé, Haiti.

The town of Limbé sits about 22 kilometers away from Haiti’s northern shore. Though it was far from the earthquake that devastated the southern regions, the town experienced a major shake-up in the wake of the quake. A tenuous balance had been tipped for towns with an already-shaky infrastructure. Lack of adequate sanitation, clean water, and food were already issues in Limbé before the quake, and the problems were only compounded.

She returns to Orcas on Friday, November 30, from 5:30 – 7 p.m., to provide the supportive Orcas community with an update in a presentation and conversation about Food Education/Sovereignty in Haiti.

The organization provides essential stability where a core of young people (aged 9 to 25 years) are learning to save seed and grow food, to prepare nutritionally complete meals, to use computers to further their specific interests and underscore the organization’s ongoing emphasis on education, and to study language. The center also serves as an incubator for small businesses.
