Joan Stamm's Saturday ikebana classes will focus on the Heika style (using tall vases)

Japanese Flower Arranging (Ikebana) Classes start later this month

The Saturday Ikebana Class with Joan Stamm will begin a new series of five classes on July 16 and continue August 13& 27, and Sept. 10 and 24.  (October classes have not yet been scheduled.)  The summer class will focus on the Heika style, which uses tall vases rather than low water basins.  Students with previous experience can also practice other styles of their choosing.

Joan Stamm is the author of Heaven and Earth are Flowers: Reflections on Ikebana and Buddhism, a 2011 Nautilus Book Award winner. She holds a Shihan (authorization to teach) from the Saga School of Ikebana located in Kyoto.

Beginners are welcome, and no previous experience is necessary.  Class is located at Emmanuel’s Old Parish Hall; it starts at 2 p.m. with a short talk, demonstration and centering meditation; then students practice their own arrangement while Joan gives individual instruction.

Tea and treats are served informally.  The class finishes by 4 p.m. The cost is $15 per session, or $50 for all five sessions.  Students bring their own plant/flower material, clippers and vases.  Joan will have a few vases, clippers and extra flower/plant material on hand.
