One of last year’s Volunteer Keepers was Rollie Sauer, doing his part keeping the school garden well watered and weed-free during the summer.

Summer is when the public school garden is generously producing crops of kale, red lettuce, edible flowers, squashes, strawberries, onions and a host of other healthy, organically-grown items.    The Farm To Cafeteria Program is once again looking for community volunteers who would like to dedicate an hour or so a day during one or two weeks looking after the garden between now and the end of August.  Your mission would be to water (if needed), do some weeding and make sure critters haven’t violated its fencing.

As a thank you for lending your tender loving care, you may harvest and take home any crops that are ready, or you may give them to a friend, neighbor, the senior center or the food bank.   Thanks to you, when school begins anew in September, the garden will be ready to gain become a wonderful “outdoor classroom” from which all students may learn lessons in the origin of foods, plant life cycles, science and math projects, nutrition, composting…the list is as endless as nature.
