Orcas and Nantucket Islands are each roughly the same size and the same distance off their respective coasts. We share the same concerns about the high cost of living, lack of affordable housing, tourist management, ferry problems and environmental degradation. We are living on opposite ends of the country but many of the issues and opportunities are the same. Recently theOrcasonian and the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror decided to share articles of mutual interest with our readers.

The Community Foundation for Nantucket (CFN) announced on Friday that it has launched a new fund to assist seniors with medical transportation expenses.

The senior medical travel fund will open by May 1 with a $100,000 gift from the McCausland Foundation. The McCausland Foundation has also pledged a dollar-for-dollar match up to an additional $100,000 through November 30, 2024.

“We read about the expiration of the travel grant and decided that the seniors who have relied on the program should be supported by the community,” Chris McCausland and Lizzie Salata said on behalf of the McCausland Foundation. “We are happy to work with the Community Foundation for Nantucket to make it happen.”

The grants will be awarded in partnership with the Nantucket Center for Elder Affairs. To apply, seniors 60 years and older who are year-round residents must complete an application for travel expenses related to off-island medical appointments and on-island critical travel needs including on-island taxis and rideshares through the NCEA. Seniors may apply for up to $500 per person, per trip for on and off island travel reimbursement.
