Sunday, April 8, 1 – 3 p.m., Orcas Library
— from JoEllen Moldoff for Writers’ Roundtable —
This Writers’ Roundtable presentation will provide attendees with information, support, and encouragement to self-publish their written works. Margie Doyle and Rosie Kuhn will answer your questions on why self-publish, how to go about it, and which print on demand — self-publishing company — is best for you, as well as where e-books fit into one’s published products.
Margie Doyle
Margie Doyle graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Comparative Literature and has worked in a salmon cannery; as a journalist, a fundraiser for nonprofits, a piano teacher, and a paralegal.
She attended workshops conducted by Jean Bryant, of Anybody Can Write renown, and completed the Creative Writing certificate program at the University of Washington. She refined her diaries of hard times in Kodiak into a novel called, The Fisherman’s Quilt, first completed in 1987. She spent the next 13 years seeking out agents, editors, and publishers in an attempt to publish The Fisherman’s Quilt.
During this time she worked as a producer of the Rick Steves’ travel videos, Europe Through the Back Door, and of the Public Broadcasting Corporation’s America’s Historic Trails. She also wrote for the Everett Herald, Seattle’s Child, New Times and Yes! Magazine; and worked for a Seattle hospital laboratory in administration.
The Fisherman’s Quilt was finally independently published in 2004. The first printing was through iUniverse, the print-on-demand company. Within three months, she was printing a second run of 2,000 books, having formed her own publishing company, Port Gamble Publishing. The Fisherman’s Quilt was a finalist for the Pacific NW Bookseller’s Association and went into its third printing that year.
In 2006 she was employed as Editor for the Islands Sounder, print and online newspaper. In 2008, she founded Orcas Issues: News and Views, an online news service that serves the Orcas Island community and the greater region.
Among her current writing projects are The Wild and Holy Child, a memoir of growing up “Boomer Catholic” on Seattle’s Capitol Hill, (on FaceBook) poetry (High Coos and Low Moans), and editing Growing Blind in Seattle and The Race of Kings.
