Dr. Amy Brook Snider will give a lecture, "Images of Experience" as part of Orcas Center's Conservatory Series

Dr. Amy Brook Snider will be the next presenter in Orcas Conservatory’s Lecture/Demo Series. This one time lecture, “Images of Experience,” will be held on Wednesday, March 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Madrona Room.

Amy Brook Snider is Chairperson of the Department of Art and Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She will combine slides of artists’ work with her talk. The cost is $10 for the evening.

In the field of art education, great attention has been paid to child
and adolescent development in art. However, there has been little scholarly interest in the “education” of the elderly self-taught artist. This presentation will look at the work of four artists and show how they transformed their life experiences into the powerful imagery in their paintings and drawings.

Chairperson of the Art and Design Education Department since 1981, Dr.
Snider also works as a consultant in arts education. Her approach to the profession is exemplified by the range of her interests—story telling, children’s picture books, self-taught artists, and the integration of design in art education, are but a few. She has lectured in the United States, Canada, Great Britain; and Amsterdam, designed educational programs; published articles, conducted workshops, curated exhibitions, organized panels and conferences, collaborated with an architectural firm, and serves on the Board of a Charter School.

Her education includes a B.A.,  from Queens College, City University of New York; M.S., University of Wisconsin Madison; Thesis: “Intelligibility and Modern Art;”and Ph.D., New York University; A Study of Three Students in a Course Called “Art and Self.”
