On a warm summer evening, you can find kids racing BMX bikes over the hilly dirt course provided at YMCA Camp Orkila, thanks to the joint efforts of Wildlife Cycles and Orkila.
The Community BMX bike course is from 6:30 p.m. to sunset on Tuesday evenings until September.
The rules are simple:
Kids must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Riders must wear long sleeves, long pants and closed toed shoes.
Full-face helmets are supplied by Camp Orkila, who also provides the BMX bikes. Riders are welcome to bring their own BMX bike..
Parents must sign a release form on first night for all riders.
And once those rules are met, the race is on! The course has been in existence for some years and Community BMX on Tuesday nights has happened over the last five years, says Wildlife owner Dan Christopherson.
The course is a professional BMX track designed according to BMX spcifications. It has three banked turns.
The racers? “It just depends on who shows up,” says Christopherson. Once the season gets going, he hopes to have some expert racing.
“It’s great for them just to get out and ride,” Christopherson says.
