Hundreds of friends and neighbors joined in the Winter Solstice Parade Thursday night. Invited to ‘Be the Light’, Orcasonians showed up with hand made luminarias, bedazzled with string lights, some dressed as woodland creatures, others as magical beings, all happy to welcome the return of the light. It was joyous to celebrate together.

Thank you to Orcas Fire and Rescue for leading the way and helping with traffic management, featuring a well decorated fire truck to boot. Thanks to everyone who participated, either by walking or watching. I suspect we have just seen the start of a new island tradition.

The fun continues on Sunday with a free showing of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ on the big screen at the Seaview Theater, thanks to a local family who are dedicating the show to their beloved dog, Hercules, who “always welcomed a new friend to his pack”. Doors open at 1:30 and the movie starts at 2.

The Montessori school annual wreath sale has been slow this year. They need to sell many more to breakeven and have dropped the price to $25. Wreaths can be purchased at Cons, Rays, and the Montessori School on North Beach Rd. Pitch in if you can.

In this time of great turmoil in so many parts of the world, we are so fortunate to live in a community that cares for each other. I hope, however you celebrate this season, you do so with joy and good health.

May peace prevail.
