This 25-foot wide, one-story house was moved from Deer Harbor to Eastsound this morning, It will see new life as an affordable home through the donation to OPAL

Earlier this morning, a house donated by Bob and Phyllis Henigson of Deer Harbor was moved to a storage space in Eastsound. The  OPAL Community Land Trust will store the house prior to a move to  Oberon Lane where it will be renovated to provide another permanently affordable home for the island community.

Pictured is the house on the move, nearing the Fowler’s Cove Corner and the turnoff to Crow Valley Road.

Plans called for the structure to  travel a route beginning on Windward Lane in Deer Harbor, along Deer Harbor Road, Crow Valley Road, Nordstrom’s Lane, Orcas Road, Mt. Baker Road and North Beach Road to Commercial Park Road (near the storage units) in Eastsound. The move took longer than expected — three hours from Deer Harbor to West Sound alone. OPAL staffer Judy Whiting said, “In one spot they literally moved inches forward and bock for 30 or more miutes before they could clear a tight spot.”

Nickel Bros. has been working closely with San Juan County Public Works to coordinate this move.
