Plus a hot dog stand and a beer garden in the shade!
— by Margie Doyle —
The amazing Harvey family again delighted — and educated — Orcas Islanders and their guests who came to the Orcas Historical Society’s Fair on the Village Green July 3. Others enjoyed hearing the experts evaluate their treasures at an “Antiques Roadshow”-inspired Appraisal Fair.

Orcas Park and Recreation had non-electronic (!) games for kids and childlike adults to play, and a hot dog stand and beer garden provided a respite from all that exertion!
With the success of the certified appraisers from the greater Seattle area (Bette Belle of Guildmark Appraisal & Estate Services, LLC; Sarahlynn Scheneck of Sound Estate Management; Greg Brown of Greg C. Brown & Associates; and Mike Odell from Auction Assets & Appraisals). the Historical Society plans to repeat that feature at next year’s celebration. If interested in future appraisal events, call Maggie Vinson in the museum office at 360-376-4849 or email her at info@orcasmuseums.org
The prodigious talents, story-telling and enjoyment of their audience made the Harvey Family Logging Show the hit of the day. Pater Familias Russ Harvey ran the show with his sons and daughter, while participants young and older (note John Willis in the slide show!) competed in competitions fueled by muscle power. In other displays, the Harvey family displayed old-fashioned and fine-tooled techniques and equipment that provided the lumber and cleared the land for the building of Orcas Island — and of the United States of America!
Historical Society Board members Jim Biddick, Tony Ayer, Jamie Crier, Bill Buchan and Harold Lenzer were on hand at the Fair. The “Log Cabin” museum in Eastsound is open Wednesdays-Saturdays from 11am-4pm and Sunday 12-3pm
The Crow Valley School museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m.
