At 11 a.m. sharp on New Year’s Day, a motley gathering shed their blankets, towel and hats to reveal tie-dye T-shirts and other hippie garb to run headlong into the grey churning waters of Cascade Lake.
Within seconds, all but three plungers were headed back to the warmth of the Moran Park shelter to escape the whipping wind, that Orcas Island Rowing Association member Dave Roseberry said comes up like clockwork just before the annual plunge on New Year’s Day.
