— from Penny Hawkes —
Hiram (Hi) Stickney passed peacefully on April 10th, 2016 with his partner Penelope (Penny) Hawkes and her son Stan by his side. Following a family memorial there will be a community celebration of Hi’s life later in the summer, for those who knew and loved him, with an announcement to follow.
At this time Penny would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to all those that have given of their time, help and loving care to Hi and herself over the years. A very special thank you to all of the members of the Orcas Island Fire Department for their patient and caring dedication to us both.

A public memorial service celebrating Hi’s life will be held at the Orcas Senior Center at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 1, 2016. Please come and celebrate Hi with his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Orcas Senior Center in Hi’s name.
A good friend gone but will never be forgotten, When they ask what was the best meal ever, I just say, “ask Hi” It was his pig. Rest in Peace, brother, Rest In Peace.
Hi was an acquaintance, then a next door neighbor. A sweet and gentle man is missed.
I had the pleasure of knowing both Hi and Jane Stickney in the early 90’s when we first moved to Orcas. Not many people on our island know that Hi was a very successful retailer in the Garment business in New York and Los Angeles before retiring to Orcas. Always gracious, always welcoming, Hi went out of his way to make our move to Orcas very comfortable. We first lost Jane many years ago and now Hi.. An era past that bring back many fond memories thanks in part to Hi’s welcoming and comfortable nature..
Thank you to all who attended Hi Stickney’s service. This was a public service open to all of the community put on by his four children. It was a lovely service for a wonderful man!
My brothers and I are so happy we saw our dad in Bellingham at St. Joesphs hospital during the week preceding his death. We were all able to tell him how much we loved him. The best gift was he knew we were there!
My family would like to express their thanks to all who attended the memorial service for our dad, Hiram Stickney. This was a public service, open to the community.
My 3 brothers and I are so glad we were able to visit with my dad the week preceding his death when we went to Bellingham and spent time with him at St. Joseph’s hospital. We were able to all tell him how much we all loved him.. The best part is…. he knew we were there!
Thank you to all who attended Hi’s memorial service last Sunday, May 2 at the Senior Center.
It was lovely to meet so many of our dad’s friends.
We worked together representing Pandora Knitwear back in the 60’s & 70’s. Rest in peace old friend.
