Last November, historic flooding occurred in nearby Whatcom County. Particularly hard hit were the communities of Sumas, Nooksack and Everson. Media coverage was relatively short-lived but the impact on those who lived and worked in this area will continue for many months.

Approximately 1900 buildings were impacted by the flooding with hundreds of people driven from their homes. Some buildings had as much as 6’ of muddy water in them. In addition to the loss of personal belongings, furnishings and structural damages, silt and debris covered the flooded areas. This area of Whatcom County is largely agricultural with a large Hispanic population. Many had little or no insurance coverage and lack the financial resources to recover.

The Lions Clubs of Whatcom County sprung into action using their financial resources and countless hours of volunteer time. They organized, purchased and provided food, clothing, cleaning supplies, portable electric heaters, small electric kitchen appliances to needy families. To date, these area Lions have spent more than $100,000 on flood relief supplies.

Flood recovery and cleanup will continue for months and our sister Lions Clubs remain firmly engaged in assisting those in need. Our Orcas Island Lions Club has pledged to match up to $2,000 in local donations. With your help we will be able send $4,000 to help continue these flood disaster relief efforts.

Donations can be sent to: Orcas Island Lions Club, PO Box 1212, Eastsound, WA, 98245 or online at: Make a Donation – Orcas Island Lions Club (orcaslions.org).
